The Ocean Starts in Our Cities – Every City Must Take Action!

Europe’s rivers and oceans are threatened by pollution, climate change, and unsustainable urban practices. Every city—whether on the coast or inland—directly impacts water ecosystems through local practices and policies.

That’s why we, the citizens, call on our city officials to commit to real action for ocean sustainability by joining the #MakeEUBlue: Cities in Action movement.

Cities across Europe are stepping up to protect our waters. Our cities can take action in many ways— from improving waste management, governance, education and restoring waterways to engaging communities and joining European initiatives.

Every signature brings us closer to action by showing that we, the citizens, care about protecting our waters. At 50 signatures, our first email will be sent to city officials. As more people sign, we will continue pushing for action until real commitments are made.

How You Can Help #MakeEUBlue?

Every signature brings your city closer to taking real action for river and ocean sustainability. Here’s what happens as more people sign:

• 50 Signatures We get in touch with your elected officials, sharing our Guide for Cities to Act
• 100 Signatures A follow-up email is sent: it’s still time to act!
• 250 Signatures Citizen support for ocean action is growing—will the city respond?
• 500 Signatures We send a fourth message, including inspirational examples from across Europe: here’s how others are leading the way—let’s follow their lead!
• 1,000 Signatures We work with local leaders to organise a community event, bringing city-dwellers and officials together to discuss next steps for ocean sustainability.
